Podocytes are a distinct cell type within the kidney glomerulus. Their major task is the filtration of blood to generate urine, and thereby retaining plasma proteins. Therefore, they are part of the glomerular filtration barrier, together with glomerular epithelial cells (GECs) and the glomerular basement membrane (GBM). To execute this complex task, podocytes need to be terminally differentiated and develop an elaborate and highly specialized actin cytoskeleton. A typical podocyte morphology is composed of three major segments, the cell body, major processes and foot processes (FPs).
